Thirty years into the Digital Revolution, we are still grappling with how best to preserve electronic content. Whether born digitally or the electronic version of analog content, electronic resources are relied upon more and more, and their long-term usability must be ensured. This webinar will provide attendees with an overview of current digital preservation standards as well as a closer look at the PREMIS standard for preservation metadata.  Attendees will also hear about the work being undertaken by HathiTrust to build and preserve a comprehensive and cooperative digital library.

  • Standards for Digital Preservation
    Priscilla Caplan, Assistant Director for Digital Library Services, Florida Center for Library Automation
    Digital preservation is a relatively young domain with a pressing need for standards and an eagerness to embrace them even as it innovates.  This presentation outlines key areas where standards are being applied or developed, including frameworks and models for preservation repositories, computer file formats and format description, exchange, and metadata. 

Priscilla Caplan is Assistant Director for Digital Library Services at the Florida Center for Library Automation, where she is responsible for the Florida Digital Archive, a long-term preservation repository for the libraries of the state university system of Florida.  She co-chaired the working group that authored the PREMIS Data Dictionary for preservation metadata and serves on the PREMIS Editorial Committee responsible for ongoing maintenance of the standard.  She is the author of several works on PREMIS and digital preservation, including Understanding PREMIS (http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/understanding-premis.pdf), "Preservation Metadata" in the Digital Curation Manual (http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resource/curation-manual/chapters/preservation-metadata/preservation-metadata.pdf) and "Preservation of Digital Materials" (Library Technology Reports v.44 no. 2).

  • Understanding PREMIS

    The PREMIS Data Dictionary is a de facto standard for preservation metadata developed by an international working group and maintained by the Library of Congress.  This presentation covers the purpose and scope of PREMIS, the PREMIS data model, and how PREMIS can and should be used.
  • Hathitrust Digital Library: Cooperation for Preservation
    Jeremy York, Assistant Librarian, University of Michigan Library
    In this presentation you will hear a general overview of the organization and mission, gain understanding of the technology and standards used by HathiTrust, and learn about their current activities and future direction.

    Jeremy York is a project librarian for HathiTrust Digital Library. He graduated from Emory University in 2001 with a B. A. in History and received a Master of Information Science from the University of Michigan in 2008. He has more than ten years experience in libraries, working in areas of course reserves, archives and special collections, and information technology.
