We're Preserving the Past, What About the Present?

HathiTrust is a broad collaboration of academic and research libraries that are working to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of the cultural record. The partnership owns and operates a digital repository where they collaboratively preserve more than 10 million volumes digitized from their library collections. This talk will discuss the strategies that the partners are taking, and the groundwork they have laid, to address the challenges of preserving not only digitized materials, but e-books and other born-digital publications.

File Format Considerations in the Preservation of e-Books

There are a number of standard e-book formats, including PDF, e-PUB, and eReader. Since the target of e-book content is e-book reader software, the content has cross-publisher quality control built in – it must work properly in the readers. This is in stark contrast to e-journal content which is designed to work in the publisher’s own web site or platform of choice. E-books in standard formats are therefore the easiest to deal with – easier than e-journal content. Sheila will present a brief overview of e-book formats and outline Portico’s methodology for identifying and preserving them.
