About the Webinar

Consistency in metadata is repeatedly discussed as problem in information management and delivery of digital resources.  One core element of that metadata is the use of controlled vocabularies and authority control.  These methods can also be applied to various elements of the research process.  Recently, a variety of projects have gained traction within the research community to identify elements of the process that will support discovery, linking and interaction with research outputs.  These systems and approaches include ORCID, DataCite, Crossref Funder IDs, CREDIT and others.  This webinar will focus on the role that libraries and publishers can play in fostering these systems in their work.  In addition to updates on a few of these initiatives, this webinar will also highlight the implementation of these systems in the research lifecycle.

Attribution from a Research Library Perspective
Micah Altman, Head/Scientist, MIT Libraries Program on Information Science

This talk summarizes the lifecycle of research attribution, with special attention to person identifiers and contributor roles. The talk describes and discusses ORCID’s new “collect-and-connect” program, and the CASRAI CRediT contributor taxonomy as exemplars of emerging good practice. We close by describing how identifiers are being incorporated into a broader range of scholarly outputs, such as software.

Dr. Micah Altman (informatics.mit.edu/director) is Director of Research and Head/Scientist, Program on Information Science for the MIT Libraries. Dr. Altman serves also as a member of the ORCID Board of Directors, and as a member of the CASRAI CRediT leadership group.

Dr Altman’s work appears primarily in the fields of social science, information privacy, information science and research methods, and statistical computation -- focusing on the intersections of information, technology, privacy, and politics; and on the dissemination, preservation, reliability and governance of scientific knowledge. Dr. Altman has authored over 70 articles; a half-dozen open source software packages; and three books and monographs. These have been published in leading outlets such as Nature, Political Analysis, Political Geography, The Journal of Statistical Software, The National Academies Press ,The Washington Post, and dozens of other professional journals.


Data, Metadata, and Data Citation: Insights from PLOS

In a world where authors are requested to comply with a variety of editorial policies, including requirements around data availability from Institutions, funders, and publishers, sensible and informed approaches are needed to ensure adoption of best practices. We will discuss PLOS’ data policy and our editorial and technical efforts to support data deposition, identification and discovery.

Emma Ganley is Joint Chief Editor of PLOS Biology and she is lead of the PLOS data program. Initially trained as a scientist with a PhD in Molecular Biology from the MRC-LMB in Cambridge followed by postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley, Emma then moved into science publishing initially joining PLOS Biology in 2005. Emma rejoined PLOS in 2010 after she took a position as Executive Editor of the Journal of Cell Biology for three years where she helped develop the JCB DataViewer.

How libraries can support the identification and discovery of scholarly output.

Libraries have an important role to play in demonstrating the potential of new tools that support the identification and discovery of scholarly output. The NCSU Libraries designed a successful local workshop on the topic of building and understanding scholarly identity for researchers as a part of the Summer of Open Science workshop series. This talk will introduce the topics we covered; including researcher identifiers, social media, and SEO for scholarly websites; and share lessons learned.

William M. Cross is the Director of the Copyright and Digital Scholarship Center in the North Carolina State University Libraries. He speaks and writes nationally on copyright, scholarly communication, and open culture.

Madison Sullivan is a Fellow at the North Carolina State University Libraries in the Research and Information Services and External Relations departments. Sullivan received her MS in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Data Curation and a graduate certificate in Special Collections Librarianship from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015.

 Ekatarina (Eka) Grguric is a Fellow at the North Carolina State University Libraries working in the User Experience department on the Web Team and in the Digital Libraries Initiatives department on an initiative to support Open Science activity at NCSU. Grguric recently completed an MLIS at the University of British Columbia iSchool, during which she took courses focused on topics in Human Computer Interaction.
