NISO Webinar: Supporting Research On Your Campus

  • You will need a computer for the presentation and Q&A.
  • Audio is available through the computer (broadcast) and by telephone. We recommend you have a set-up for telephone audio as back-up even if you plan to use the broadcast audio as the voice over Internet isn't always 100% reliable.
  • Please check your system in advance to make sure it meets the Cisco WebEx requirements. It is your responsibility to ensure that your system is properly set up before each webinar begins.  

About the Webinar

Libraries serve as important conduits of research.  Not only is research about previous activities important, libraries also support ongoing research activities, through the provision of information resources, repository activities, and skill in information management to research teams.   In providing these services, academic libraries support the overall research mission of many institutions.  They also make the library more visible and valued among its community.  This webinar will highlight some successful libraries that have integrated their services into the research activities in their institutions.  Speakers will describe ways that they support researchers beyond traditional library services, and how they have become more engaged in the research activities, though tools, data, resources, or skills.

Library as Research Partner
Dr. Paul J. Bracke, Associate Dean, Assessment & Research, Purdue University;

A changing climate for research presents libraries with many opportunities to engage more deeply with the research mission of their institutions. Emerging paradigms of information- and data-intensive research, interdisciplinary research programs, and funder mandates afford libraries the opportunity to be campus partners throughout the research lifecycle. This presentation will discuss the Purdue Libraries’ approach to research collaboration, and the programs and services that have allowed the Libraries to become more deeply integrated into the research life of the university.

Paul Bracke is Associate Dean for Research and Assessment and Associate Professor at the Purdue University Libraries. In this position, he has several areas of responsibility for promoting research by Libraries’ faculty and integration with research activities on campus, oversight of research data collaborations, developing strategies for assessment of libraries programs and overall library impact, and information technology within the Purdue Libraries.


NC State's Competitive Advantage for Research: the NCSU Libraries Diffuse Approach 
Greg Raschke, Associate Director for Collections and Scholarly Communication, North Carolina State University; 

The NCSU Libraries vision is to serve as NC State's competitive advantage, including in support the research enterprise. The Libraries pursues this vision through a diffuse model of research support that includes high-technology spaces throughout its physical libraries, diffusion of expertise across departments and throughout research librarian liaisons, cross-departmental teams of librarians, creative partnerships with researchers, engagement with key campus constituents, and innovative e-research support infrastructure. This presentation will cover highlights from the Libraries diffuse and deeply engaged approach to supporting research and adding value to the university research enterprise.

Greg Raschke is the Associate Director for Collections and Scholarly Communication at the NCSU Libraries where he leads programs to build, manage, and preserve the Libraries’ extensive collections. His responsibilities include overseeing the collections program and the development of digital collections. He has significant experience managing fundraising, annual giving, and naming opportunity campaigns. He leads the Libraries’ partnerships in developing sustainable channels for scholarly communication and enhancing digitally enabled research and scholarship. Raschke also leads efforts to support faculty and graduate students with emerging tools, programs, and services across the research lifecycle.

Supporting Research at Montana State University with DISC

Data Infrastructure and Scholarly Communication (DISC) is a joint initiative launched by the library and the IT Center at Montana State University (MSU). The mission of DISC is to elevate and amplify research produced at MSU, helping researchers thrive in a competitive funding environment and promoting the discovery, use and impact of their work. DISC pools the resources and expertise of ITC and the Library to provide computing infrastructure and complementary services that include data management, digital scholarship, researcher identification, scholarly communication, search engine and semantic web optimization, and social media. This presentation will describe some of the services and sample projects, as well as the formation of the initiative.

Kenning Arlitsch is a dean at Montana State University, where he leads a progressive research library that supports student success, the university’s research enterprise, and statewide cooperative efforts. His funded research for the past six years has focused on search engine and Semantic Web optimization for digital repositories, and he is enrolled as a doctoral student at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.

  • Registration closes at 12:00 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Cancellations made by Wednesday, April 27, 2016 will receive a refund, less a $25 cancellation. After that date, there are no refunds.
  • Registrants will receive detailed instructions about accessing the webinar via e-mail the Monday prior to the event. (Anyone registering between Monday and the close of registration will receive the message shortly after the registration is received, within normal business hours.) Due to the widespread use of spam blockers, filters, out of office messages, etc., it is your responsibility to contact the NISO office if you do not receive login instructions.
  • If you have not received your Login Instruction email by 10:00 a.m. (ET) on the Tuesday before the webinar, at please contact the NISO office at nisohq@niso.org for immediate assistance.
  • Registration is per site (access for one computer) and includes access to the online recorded archive of the webinar. You may have as many people as you like from the registrant's organization view the webinar from that one connection.   • Library Standards Alliance (LSA) members receive one free webinar connection as part of their membership and DO NOT need to register for the event for this free connection.
